CHAMBER OF COMMERCE.

VANCOUVER MAIL SERVICE.

PORT OF CALL QUESTION.

The council meeting of the Auckland Chamber of Commerce Council, was held yesterday. Present : Messrs. N. A. Nathan (president), J. B. Macf&rlane, S. J. Nathan, J. Reid, J. H. Upton, Graves Aickin, B. Kent, W. Gunson, and J. W. Hall.

The following telegram, with regard to the port of call, for a proposed New Zea-land-Vancouver mail service, was received from the Acting-Premier, the Hon. W. Hall-Jones:—"ln reply to your telegram re Vancouver service, apparently you have been misinformed. The matter is left to the discretion', of the tenderers to name either Auckland or Wellington."

The President said Auckland as a port, -was the nearest in point of situation, and, moreover, it possessed the better facilities; but he understood that iit had been definitely settled that Wellington was to be the port of call. However, the Acting-Pre-mier was communicated with on the matter, and the council now had his reply, and it was not necessary for the Chamber to take any further action at the present time. Replying to Mr. J. W. Hall, the president said he did not know whether the Union S.S. Company would be the tenderers for the service, but he understood that it was the intention of the Premier (Sir Joseph Ward) to make inquiries on the subject at Home. Mr. Hall said all he wished was that steps should be taken to place before tenderers the advantages of Auckland as a port. Mr. Aickin held that Auckland as a port could stand on its merits. .Mining Committee: Mr. Macfarlaue moved: ''That a Mining Committee be set up, to consist of members of the Chamber, not necessarily members of the council. Mr. Aickin seconded the motion and it was carried.

Butter in Coal Trucks: Messrs. Green and Colebrook, Hamilton, wrote complaining of the carriage of butter in coal trucks, and the consequent spoiling of the goods. Mr. Hall said this kind of thing was of continual occurrence. The actual money loss in connection with the transit of dairy butter by rail was 25 per cent.
