On Saturday night the Huntly Brass Band, under the direction of Bandmaster Mcintosh, gave an open-air concert, which was highly appreciated and enjoyed by the large crowd that listened to the various selections so well and carefully rendered. Of late the band has made great strides, the improvement induced by regular practice and careful tuition being marked. It is to be hoped that, for the sake of the public enjoyment, such concerts will be provided more frequently, and an opportunity afforded the residents of showing their practical sympathy with Mr. ' Mcintosh and his instrumentalists.

In order to retrieve the laurels lost lust year, the natives />( Waahi and Ra&anmanga are overhauling and giving the last touches to.the canoes which are to take part in the races at Xgaruawahia regatta on the ISth inst. Morning and evening practice "will be started, and will be continued for some days. In the local native mind last year's defeat still rankles.

On Saturday the children attending the Presbytrian Sunday-school were conveyed in the oil launch Columbia by Mr. J. Greenacre, who placed his boat and his services at the command of the committee, to Mr. J. P. Bailey's paddock, where the annual picnic was held. In Huntly the weather during the forenoon was very showery, but, fortunately, the rain was "only local, *.- that, with games, swings, and races,' the youngsters had a good time. The superintendent, Mr. .lames Shaw, who was assiduous in his efforts, and left nothing undone, to provide the pleasure of the must have felt compensated for the workundertaken when he witnessed the evident enjoyment of all concerned. A generous commissariat, gave unbounded satisfaction, while the presentation to each child of a toy and a hag of lollies was the finishing touch to a thoroughly healthy and enjoyable outing.
