Captain Sharp, of cable steamer Iris, has returned from his visit to Sydney. Mr C J. Fulton, fibre expert, arrives from New Plymouth by the Rarawa to-day. Mr D. Gouk, sen., and Mrs. Gouk. who have been on a visit to the South, have returned to Auckland. Colonel Gudgeon, C.M.G., British Resident in the Cook Islands, leaves Auckland -for Rarotonga next month. Mr. Norman Whyfe, secretary to the Onehnnga Sawmilling Company, left by the Takapuna yesterday for the Soutn. Mr and Mrs. George Fcnwick, of Napier, -who nave been on a visit to the Hot Lakes district, are at present in Auckland. Mr A. W. Short, late of Prince Albert College, Auckland, has accepted a position on the teaching staff of the Boys High School, Napier. ■ A Press Association telegram from Invercargill last night stated that during the evening Colonel Hawkins, who was recently appointed to the command of the Canterbury volunteer district, was entertained by the" Southland Volunteer Battalion. lhe volunteers made him a presentation. 'Mr R. Chiplin, foreman of the Devonport Volunteer Fire Brigade, who is leaving ft to take up his residence at Taumarunui, was entertained at a social by the members of the brigade last night. Much regret was expressed at Foreman Chiplin's departure, and all present wished him every success in his new sphere. Captain Kennedy, master of the Pateena, is under orders to proceed to headquarters. Captain Stewart, of the Penguin, has been transferred to the Pateena, and he has been succeeded bv Captain Hunter, late of the Wainui. Captain F. P. Evans, late chief officer of the Maheno, is now in command of the Wainui. Mr. A. C Showman, late chief officer of the Rotomahana, has joined the Maheno in a similar capacity. Mr. J. J. Taine, who arrived by the Victoria from Sydney on Sunday last, cele, brates his 90th birthday to-day. His friends will he pleased to hear that he is in capital health and spirits, and is as active and energetic as many men of half his age: still reading and writing without the aid of spectacles. Mr. Taine is one of New Zealand's earliest colonists, having arrived at Wellington in 1840 in the ship Adelaide.
