BOROUGH COUNCILS.

, GREY LYNN.

The Oroy Lynn Borough Council met last evening, there being present: Messrs. A. Donald, A. A. Creamer, W. W. Dumper, W. Dimery. W. S. Smith, C. .Savers, W. Murray, W. Martin, and C. B. King. Mr. Donald, as Deputy-Mayor, presided in the absence of the Mayor (Mr. .1. Fan-ell).

Millais-street: The Streets Committee, which had considered Mr. J. Cnrrie's request in regard to an alteration in the levels of Millais-street. recommended that alteration be made. The committee's report was adopted.

Water Supply: The Waterworks Committee recommended the purchase of 200 patent stop cock covers. The Deputy-Mayor said that 500 of these covers would probably bo needed during the next six months. The committee's recommendation was adopted. On the motion of Mr. Creamer it was resolved that the turncock be instructed to proceed with the Richmond waterworks extension, as far as the material at hand will allow, as early as possible, (treat North Road: The following tenders wore received for kerbing and channelling en the (treat North Road:lohn Irwin. £399 7; 6<l: Drumni and Williams, £415 b<. Mr. Irwin's tender was accepted. Fire Brigade: The town clerk I.Mr. It. 11. Irwin) drew the Council's attention to the provisions of the Fire Brigades Act. The Act, he pointed out, made no provision for fire districts outside of the four large cities. The Deputy-Mayor said that the matter required consideration, and on his motion it was referred to 1 he Fire Brigade and Waterworks Committee to report upon. Mr. Savers suggested that a man should be kept at work on the streets within the precincts of the fire brigade station and also a man within the vicinity of the Richmond station, in order to be close at hand in the event of fire. The foreman of works (Mr. Sadgrove) said he thought, the suggestion could be carried out. The fire brigade superintendent (Mr. Fenton) concurred, and he also suggested that two firemen should be engaged to sleep at the central station, at a small remuneration, in order to ensure quick attention at fires. It was resolved to adopt Mr. Savers' recommendation.

PARNELL. The ordinary meeting of the ParneM Borough Council was held last evening. In the absence of the Mayer (Mr. O. W. Basle v) Mr. R. T. Rriggs presided, and others present were: Messrs. Wood, Mitchell. Edgecumbe, Fowler, and Tapper. Bathing at Judge's Bay: Mr. Kdgecnmbe drew attention to the fact that youths and young men had been bathing at Judge's Bay in a nude condition, and suggested that the attention of the police should be drawn to the matter. This course was agreed to. Mr. Briggs said he hoped the time would soon come when Parnell would have a proper place in which its residents might bathe.

Turncock's Report : The turncock reported the consumption of 1,6'.+.C00 gallons of water for the past fortnight, an increase of 6000 gallons compared with the preceding fortnight.

NEWMARKET. The ordinary meeting of the Newmarket Borough Council, held last evening, was attended by Messrs. F. Bennett (Mayor). W. Kdgerlov, R. Davis, C. La Roche, 11. Holmes' H. Kinder. T. McCotl. C. I,eek. and A. Sercombe. Improving the Borough:, A suggestion was made by Mr. Davis that the Council should take in hand the matter of improving the present appearance of the borough, the first step being to construct, kerb and channel the footpath in front of the square along Victoria Crescent and Manukau Road. He also urged that firms bo prohibited from placing advertisements on the reserve fence and action be taken by officials against future offenders. The Mayor recognised that the appearance of the place was disgraceful, and he supported the suggestion made by Mr. Davis. The matter was referred to the Streets Committee, as also was the question of reporting on the' best method and cost of improving the approach to the railway bridge on Manukau Road. Finance: Accounts passed for payment amounted to £457 6s 7d.

Water Consumption: The turnock reported the water consumption for the month to amount to 84,000 gallons, and 26.250 had been used on he streets.

Labourers' Pay: It was decided to increase, the wages of four labourers to 8> a day, and to pay future casual labour at the same rate.

DEVONPORT. Tlio ordinary meeting of the Devonport Borough Council was held last night, and was attended by the Mayor (Mr. K. W. Alison, M.H.R.) and Messrs. Robert Logan, jun., C. P. Murdoch, J. B. Graham, K. G. Osborne, W. I). McLean, B. G. Ford. W. IT. Timewell. and Win. Handley. Firo Brigade: A letter was received from the members of the Devoport Fire Brigade asking the Council for financial assistance to enable them to send a team to the* United Fire Brigade Association's demonstration, which is to be held at Christchurch in March next. The Council decided to grant the brigade £5 towards their funds. Morgue: The Streets and Works Committee recommended that the consideration of the erection, etc., of a morgue for Devonport ho deferred until next meeting of the Council.

Street Sweeper: The Streets Committee recommended the Council to obtain a street sweeper, and asked that the committee be authorised to ascertain particulars and cost of same and report to the Council. Both recommendations were adopted. Finance: Accounts amounting to £299 2s 2d were passed for payment.

ONEHUNGA. The ordinary meeting of the Onehunga Borough Council was hold at the Borough Chamber last evening, when there were present: Messrs. John Howe (Mayor). W. Blyth. U. Moody, sen., C. A. Osborne, Jas. Williams, S. R. Skinner. W. Colledge, sen.. A. Hutchison, S. Barr. Water Consumption: The turncock reported having pumped 1,952,000 gallons of water during the past fortnight. Finance: It was announced that the general account was £450 Gs fid in credit. and the cemetery account £309 lis Id in credit. The total credits were. £765 17s. Accounts ■".mounting to £262 17s 5d were passed for payment. Petition: A petition was received from residents of Hill street praying that the road l>e properly formed and metalled. Mr. Blyth took charge, and the petition was ordered to lie upon the table for a fortnight. I Complaints: The foreman of works complained that a number of shop verandahs I had no down pipe-: and the overflow in wot I weather damaged footpaths. He also asked | that action bo taken to prevent carters from i driving along concrete channels and thereby j causing unnecessary damage. Referred to I the Council in committee. ! Overgrowth: Resolved that the property- ; owner- of Upper Selwyn-street lie requested | to cut down overgrowth in front of their | properties. | Quadrant Road: Mr. ('. .1. Schnauer wrote calling attention to the necessity for road ami footpath improvements in Quadrant. Road. Referred to the Council in committee. Asphalting: Or; the motion of the Mayor it was resolved to procure a larger amount of tar for the purpose of carrying out. further footpath improvements. Statutory Half-holiday: It. was decided, ! on the recommendation of the Mayor, to appoint Wednesday as tho weekly half-holi-day. Flood Water: Mr. K. Sutherland complained that flood water had formed a lagoon near his property, and that the stagnant, water was objectionable. Resolved to take steps to abate the nuisance. Right-of-way: Messrs. Heskoth and Richmond forwarded deed of conveyance in connection with a right-of-way off Churchstreet to the back of Wayland's property. Agreed to sign same without prejudice to tin- Council's interests. Sanitary Contract: It was agreed to adopt the night-soil contractor's charge of 3£d per pan in lieu of the old rale? of 3d per pan per week. Water Extension: Agreed that water be supplied to a railway standpipo on condition that the Department, procure the pipes. Tin; Reservoir: In view of the large amount of water pumped of late it was derided to instruct, the assistant turncock to visit the reservoir each day and report on the condition of tho same. Band Committee: Mr. Barr retired from the Band Committee, and Mr. Skinner was appointed in his stead. The Mayor remarked that, members of the Council ought to fake every possible interest in tho town band and see that its affairs were capably carried out. Dust Nuisance: Mr. W. Blyth reported on the conference of local bodies in connection with tho dust nuisance, after which it was decided to leave the matter in abeyance.
