THEFT OF A RING

A TOOTH named George Perrett pleaded guilty, before Mr. C. C. Kettle., S.M., at the Police Court on Saturday to stealing a gold ring, valued at £3, the property of James Young.

Sub-Inspector Gordon said that the com plainant, who resided at the fame house, as the accused, left his ring in his vert pocket, and on looking for it some time afterwards he found that it, had disappeared. He accused Perrett of stealing the ring, and gave him in charge.

Accused said he came to tlte colony from London, five months ago, in search of his father, who had left a wife and a. family of seven children unprovided for in London. After some time, ho discovered his father in Auckland, and on asking him to contribute towards the support of his (the father's) wife and family, he refused to do so. ♦Continuing, accused said, " I wanted to show him up in the Police Court so as to let the people know that he was here." Mr. Kettle: Why did you steal the ring? Accused: So that I could be locked up to let the people know about my father. Mr. Kettle: But why did you pawn the ring? Accused, who failed to answer the question, was remanded until Wednesday next for the probation officer's report.

REMANDED. William Welch was remanded until Wednesday next on a charge of stealing a rug, a razor, anil a pair of trousers, valued at \l<-. the property of .lames Walker. Richard Stem-on, charged with having attempted to commit suicide at Houhora, was remanded until Monday, on the application of Sub-Inspector Gordon. James MoWilliams, charged with sly grog-selling, was remanded until Wednesday next.

DRUNKENNESS. Of three first offenders charged with drunkenness, two were fined 5s each and costs, or in default 24 hours' imprisonment, and the other was convicted and discharged on consenting to a prohibition order being issued against him for 12 months.
