THE AFRIDIS.

RAIDING ON THE INDIAN

FRONTIER.

By Telegraph Press Association Copyright

London, January '■lb. The Afridi tribes have again become troublesome, and the ZakkaKhels are raiding on the Indian frontier.

The tribesman in the Svat, Valle- instigated by a mad mullah, began a holy war in March of 1897, and the trouble extended over a wide area. In August the Afridi*, who occupy the mountains on the south of the Kabul River, attacked the Ali Mesjcd fort, and captured Fort Maude, Khyber Pass, though they were under an obligation to guard the pass for the British. These troubles rendered large and difficult military operations necessary, several columns advancing from India. Peace was not fully restored until the following year. It probably will be found that fanaticism is behind this latest outbreak; and in that case an important frontier campaign may be necessary.
