THEFT OF JEWELLERY.

SENTENCE

At the Polite Court yesterday, before Mr. C. ('. Kettle, S.M., ,i young man named Karl Hellstrom was charged with stealing at Kaurimu a quantity of jewellery, valued at £155 lb" b'i. the properly of Tamis Eaiaia. Chief-Detective .Mar-a't!; prosecuted.

The complainant, a hawker, residing at Auckland, said that in Deceml>er last, he vr»% engaged in hawking jewellery at Kaurimu, and while there he lived at Mr. John Sterling's l>oardinghou«-e. On December 7he left his jewellery in his bedroom, it was quite safe at hail pa-1 six p.m., but at about half-past eight p.m. it had disappeared. At the time licensed was engaged at. the boardinghouse as a co >k. The jewellery produced belonged to witness, and was valued at £153 16s 61. Some articles were still missing.

Evidence was given by three pawnbrokers to the effect that accused pawned a quantity of the jewellery at their shops, consisting of gold rings, brooches, bracelets. chain,, lockets, watches, and other articles. Accused told one of tin- pawnbrokers that hilather had died in Tonga, am' he wanted to sell deceased's jewellery. Detective Win. Scott .said on the loth inst. lie asked accused if he had pawned any jewellery, hoc! he replied "No." Hellstrom subsequently -aid lie had pawned a. ring. Questioned alxnit the jewellery, accused said thai he took it from a bedroom at Raurimu, and then burnt the l"'\ in which it. wa.s kept. lb- also said that he gave some of it away and pawned some. When formally charged, accused pleaded guilty, and was committed to the Supreme ('our;, for sentence. An application by Mr. Singer lor bail was refused.

John Burns, a, third offender, was fined ?,0s and costs, in default, seven days' imprisonment. Defendant was also prohibited for 12 months.
