THE THAW MURDER CASE.

• THE TRIAL BEGUN.

By Telegraph.— Association.—Copyright.

New York, January "24. The trial of Harry Thaw for the murder of Mr. Stanford White, the New York architect, has begun. Two hundred jurors were summoned, and there were thirty objections before the panel was obtained. Counsel for the prosecution, in his opening speech, said that the jurors must return their verdict upon the written law, and not be influenced by the so-called unwritten law of the right of private vengeance.

The murder took place on .Tune 25 last. Thaw and his wife went, to an entertainment in Madison Square roof garden, and there found White sitting at a, small table chatting with a lady. Approaching the, table Thaw drew a revolver, and, tiring three or four shots, killed White on the .-pot. He (hen turned to his wife and said. "He ruined you : now I have fixed him." The American newspapers, as is their custom, took -ides, some for Thaw and some against him, and published scandalous details of the lives of all the parties concerned. From these allegations it seems that prior to her marriage .Mrs. Thaw was on the stage, and known as Evelyn Nesbit. At that time she was acquainted with White, who befriended her, from improper motives one. side says, and from disinterested motives, according to the. other side. It seems clear that Thaw suspected White of seeking to renew his relations with Mrs. Thaw, whatever they were, and the murder was the result of the discovery of a note from the victim to the woman. The prisoner is a young man and a millionaire, and the murdered man was 53 years of age, and an architect of European, as well as American, reputation. The sister of the prisoner is the Countess of Yarmouth.
