LEATHER ADULTERATION.

London". January 20. The Agent-General for New South Wales attended a meeting yesterday of lie leather section of the Chamber of Commerce. The members of the section strongly condemned the Australian practice of adulterating leather, and asked Mr. Coghlan to advise the colonial manufacturers to cease the use of adulterants.

On the other hand, the Chamber decided to support Mr. Coghlan's endeavour to get all the imported leather examined for sugar.

Recently large parcels of Australian leather were stopped by the English Customs authorities and duty claimed on 22 per cent, of sugar used in its manufacture. Ihe export certificate .showed that the leather contained seven per cent, of sugar, Ihe Agent-General for New South Wales wrote to the Customs Department claiming that American and Argentine leather, which also contained sugar, should be made to pay duty.
