THE AUCKLAND TRAMWAY SERVICE.

ROLLING STOCK CRITICISM).

[by TM.KCK U'H. —own ( OKI! i;m'o lIKNT. ]

isir nrcii, .Monday. Mr. H. Pearck, a member of the Christ church Tramway Board, who lias returned to Christ-church after an extended toutthrough the North Island, made a point when in Auckland' of seeing what lie could of the working of the Auckland tramway service, and to a Press reporter lie gave a very candid opinion concerning it. "Auckland,'' he affirmed, " has got the worst tramway service of the four centres. The ears are of an out-of-date ty]K\ and are frightfully noisy. They are painted a very <lilly yellow, and ,-iie allowed to run in a scry untidy state altogether. The permanent way, from which I could see of it, was by no means equal to the Christ church permanent way. They have an inspecting sy stem the same a* we have here, but they employ a much larger number of ins{>eetors. However, it is a fine (service as regards quickness. The car*" are kept going continually, ana ft you miss on. oar you have only to wait a minute or two fur another, I he Auckland people have got more into the tram habit than we have here, and everybody seems to ride. That, however, is partly accounted for by the la>ct, that the town is hilly, and very few people cycle."

Mr. Pearce added that he spent » day with the chairman of directors of the company owning the service arid Mr. P. M. Hansen, the local manager, and those gentlemen had informed him that tin Auckland ears were to he painted the same colour m the Christ church ear*. The com pany were also arcing to put on 12 or 15 additional cars, and the whole of the car* were to be fitted with new and more siltm motors.
