VICTORIA PARK.

Sir.—After reading the favourable and refreshing articles on the .Mayor's sensible suggestion re Victoria Park extension it made out; feel mean and miserable to peruse " \V.\V.\Y.'s dissentient growl in Wednesday's paper. He complains of increased rates. It we. were all imbued with the i- - d spirit to such an extent we should have a city without beauty spots or parkof any description. lie alii complains that anyone visiting Victoria Park ha- great 'lit ficully in avoiding flying cricket hulls, and yet in the -am, breath be objects to having the park extended l.i where it should have been in the first plate, ihereby giving ample room for the womenfolk ami children to enjoy themselves in safety. It is sheer nonsense to suggest doing away with cricket and other recreations because there is a suspicion of danger attached to them. I would ask " W.W'.W." what other sports grounds have we within reasonable distance of the city, and accessible to those who enjoyjheir rOLT'ation after their day'- work? There is another important side to this question. If the allotments are leased, we shall have one of our'main .-tree;, lined with timber and eoalyards, interspersed with ramshackle buildings thai would disgrace a mining town, a blot on the citv for all time. Although it is hard to realise that anyone, ratepayer or otherwise, through narrowmindedness or lack of public spirit will let such a thing happen without protest, it. behoves them for the general good to assist the Mayor and others in so worthv an object as the park extension. .Esthete.
