PRICE OF GAS IN DUNEDIN.
. [BY TELEGRATH.OWN CORRESPONDENT.] Dunkdin, Wednesday. From what was said at the meeting of the . City' Council there are prospects of the price for corporation gas being ultimately reduced to 5s per 1000 cubic feet all round, so great ■K have been the savings in working expenses since the reorganisation of the gasworks staff. The Council ratified the Gas Committee's recommendation to reduce the price from 6s <5d to "ss. 101 per ■thousand of gas for lighting 'purposes. Mr. Walker (chairman of the Gas Committee) said the reconstruction of the staff had led to results that were simply remarkable. Since securing the advice of Mr. English, and placing Mr. • Hungerford in charge as manager, a saving at the rate of £1000 a year had been made in wages alone. The Mayor stated that the savings would amount to £8000 a year, the ! chief factor being the greater amount of gas .produced per ton of coal carbonised. ■};}' Through ,' this \ greater efficiency achieved l. there seems to be a probability that the gas- '.-.. works will not be merely self-supporting, < .but'that "even at the reduced tariff they will '■'* yield 'profits, that can be used to alleviate v. the burden of ; the rates, which was the jV original consideration when they were 0 municipalised.?
