STUD NOTES.

BT PHAETON.

At Gleuora Park Curacoa (by Cuirassier Rubina), the half-sister to Machine Gun, has thrown a filly to Soult.

Pretty Polly's dam, Admiration, is in foal to Flying Fox. Her foal by St. Frusquin died when she was over in France. in the spring.

English-bred stallions continue to be imported to Australia very freely. The two latest arrivals notified are:; Khubarb (by Persimmon from Guernsey Lily, by Orme) and Curtain Lecture (by Ugly from Lecture, by Lecturer).

It transpires that Pretty Tolly is not to have the opportunity of wiping - out the sensational defeat that she suffered at the hands of Bachelor's Button in the Ascot Gold Cup, Major Loder having decided on sending her to the stud next year. The mate selected for Pretty Polly is Lavcno (by Bend Or).

The death is reported from England of the stallion Royal Hampton? by Hampton. Among other good horses sired by Royal Hampton were Kirkeonnel (winner of the Two Thousand Guineas, 1595), Pensioner, Forfarshire, and Unicorn. As Royal Hampton had readied his 24th year he was a good old age.

The successful sire Grafton was purchased in England for 500gns. by the Hon. Agar Wynne, of Victoria. He "was imported to Victoria by that gentleman, who, not having any use for him, handed the colt over to Mr. Tom Pay ton, to sell or lease on given terms. Mr. Payton, who breeds horses in partnership with Mr. James Thompson, of Oakleigh, induced the latter to take Grafton on lease for a term,' with the right to purchase at lOOOgns. When Grafton's first, foals were about a year old Mr. Thompson, being thoroughly satisfied with them, bought the horse right out. Mr. Thompson is the sole owner, and never had a partner in Grafton. The horse was bred by Mr. J. H. Pratt, of Bruntwootl Stud, in the North of 'England. He was purchased for 380gns. when a .yearling by the late Baron Hirscli, owner of Grafton's near relation La Fleche. Tt was at the sale of the late Baron's stud that Mr. Wynne purchased Grafton.

GAMBLING, PAST AND PRESENT. In referring.to the onslaught being delivered on betting, "Ribblecien," of the Australasian, says:—"lf there is a gambling mania to-day it may be asked what was the extent of gambling 20 years ago, or before- that period? Twenty years ago two or three punters invested more money on horses at Flemington than all the peoplo who go to Flemington nowadays put together. Australians will readily call to mind the "Jubilee Juggins," Ernest Bonzon—how he rode Mr. Whittingham's horse Parwan in a race at Elsternwick Park, and fell off after passing the post, to the amusement of the spectators. Benzon went the pace in Australia, and returning to England he gave his experiences in a book, entitled. "How I Lost £250,000 in Two Years." Somewhere about the same time there was another Ernest, to wit, Ernest Brodribb, who, during the slander action Kellv v. Gill, said that he had £8000 on Moorebank for the Caulfield Cup; and it was quite a common tiling for him to invest a thousand or two on an old "screw" in a selling race—old Ballarat, for instance. Brodribb's short and merry life enriched the ring considerably. Wales, a confectioner, was wonderfully lucky in his turf investments during the early stages of his turf career, but he went out of the business a wiser but sadder man. Walton, an American, was another that at one time peppered the ring, but luck turned till one day his settling account was missing. „^ a ' l James Fox on one occasion netted £15,000 by laying against a favourite at Newmarket, and at another meeting at headquarters won £30,000 in three days. His racing partner, Lord Foley, commenced his turf career with £100,000" in ready money and an estate worth £18,000 a. year, but" when he died in 1793 ho was bankrupt. Richard Early of Barrymore started to bet heavily when only 19 years old, and after four seasons lost £100,000. During the- closing stages of the eighteenth century an inveterate gambler was Lord Darlington. Two matches were arranged between his lordship's Pavilion and Mr. Mellish's Sancho, each of which was for 3000 guineas a-side. There was probably mors bitting on these affairs than was the case in the great match between Flying Dutchman and Voltigeur.' The first match was won easily by Sancho, but in tho second, after appearing to be winning easily, he broke down and Lord Darlington netted nearly £20,000 as the result of the accident. In 1334- the same owner, together with the rest of the stable connections, believed that they had a good thing for the Derby in Shillelagh. Their faith in the horse was so strong that they would not hedge a penny. Shillelagh was. however, beaten by Plenipotentiary. By this defeat the owner lost £18.000, Messrs. Bland and Halliday dropped £60,000, Steven- (fish .salesman) suffered to the extent of £20.000, r and the brothers Ghifney—Sam and Will were broke by the result of the race. >
