The Mikasa was Admiral Togo's flagship throughout tho war. On Sunday, September 10, of last year, she was lying at anchor at Sasebo, undergoing cleaning and repairs. At midnight a fire occurred, at the base of the mainmast and spreading rapidly, reached the magazines, which exploded. The vessel sank suddenly after these explosions, at half-past two a.m. on the 11th. More than 500 lives were lost jin the explosions and by drowning.
