BOARD OF EDUCATION.

The ordinary meeting of the Auckland

*. Education Board was held yesterday, Mr. J. I D. McKenzie presiding in the absence of 5 the chairman, Mr. L. J. Bagnall. There' , were also present: Messrs. J. Barriball, A. R. Harris, J. Stallworthy, and F. W. Lang. s Chairman's Report: The report of the . chairman, among other matters, stated that the acceptance of the tender of Mr. W. A. ; Clarke (£296) for enlargement of the school ; building at Lake Takapuna had been authorised. The resignations of Misses A. ' M. Beale (teacher, Papakura Valley school), '■ A. ■S. Hyatt (Whakahara), and A. Barton i (Napier-street), and Mrs. M. Phillips ' (Kauaeranga school, Thames) had been received. Selection of Teachers: The following recommendations of the Teachers Selection Committee re teaching appointments were . adopted:—Mr. G. H. Smith, to be head- ■ master of Mamaku school; Mr. A. S. Cliffo, to be teacher of Putaruru school: Miss E. A. Tisdall, to be teacher of Kirikiriroa school; Miss Grace Moffatt, to be teacher of Wharehine school; Mr. W. ,J. N. Elct- ■ cher, to bo teacher of Paradise school; Miss M. A. I. G. Dean, assistant to Huntlv school; Miss J. C. A. do Montalk, assistant to Hora Hora school; Miss Ethel E. Bond, assistant to Waikumete' school. That the Driving Creek School Committee be consulted as to the proposed appointment of Miss Ruby E. Broadgatc as assistant teacher. That a substitute assistant be sent to the Hobsonville school until the end of the present year. That applications be .invited by advertisement for the under-named appointments: Sole charge, Papakura Valley No. 1, Tiroa, Whakahara, Henderson Point';' assistants, Napier-street at £155, Kauaeranga at £135, Waihopo at £90. Finance: The report of the Finance Committee embracing the following clauses was adopted:—(l) Your committee recommend payment of the following accounts: Administration account, £11.959 18s; building account, £671 18s sd; manual and technical account. £881 6s 4d; Girls' High School account, £150. (2) Your committee have examined the treasurer's statement of receipts and expenditure for the month of October, showing a debit balance of £4965 4s 7d on buildings account at the end of the month. (3) Your committee recommend that application be made to the Minister for an instalment of £3000 on account of the ordinary grant for school buildings. j New Schools: Applications from Makatote, -Manunui, Pepepe, Raupo, and luranga-a-moana for new schools were referred to the inspectors to report, and similar applications from Honikiwi and Kakapuka were declined. Ldeudaie Site and School: Referring to the decision of the Board to acquire two acres of ground in Edcndalo Road and build a school to accommodate at least 250 scholars the secretary stated that the Rev. Mr. Miller, who had been, requested to report on the question of a site, was at present absent in the South, and the report was not therefore yet available. The matter was deferred, and it was decided to apply for the necessary grant in the meantime. .Christmas. Holidays: The Board decidedthat the Christmas and Now Year school, holidays should start on Friday, December a, and close on Friday, February 1, both days inclusive. Itinerant Teachers: Reporting' on the question of the employment of itinerant' teachers in outlying- districts such as those surrounding Kawhia, the chief inspector (Mr i). Petrie) said that the only difficulty was to get suitable teachers to undertake the work for the small pay that could be earned at such schools. ; So far as he was aware satisfactory provision had been made for all demands on the Board emanating from Kawhia County. When roads were improved it might be possible to combine some small schools at present taught by sole teachers. The pay under this arrangement was much more liberal and better teachers could thus be secured. 'The report was received'. Ihe Technical College: The director of technical education (Mr. George George) reported that Mrs. Armitage, teacher of French at the Technical College, had'resigned her position. The resignation was accepted with regret, and it was decided to send a letter of appreciation in recognition of her past services. Mr. George also reported that the students' subscription lists for raising funds towards the equipment of the proposed new technical college had now been closed, and that as a result of the efforts put forth £300 had been paid into the bank.. This amount would carry a £ for £ subsidy by the Government. As the monev would not acquired for about 12 month's ' he thought that it should be invested. The suggestion was adopted, and a special resolution was passed recognising the efforts of the students. . •

New Training College: A communication was received from the Inspector-General of Schools enclosing a copy of the plans of the JJnnedin raining College, and stating that in his opinion these were more suitable for the proposed Auckland Training College than 1 those submitted by 'ho Auckland Board. J he principal of the college an Air. Watt architect, submitted a joint report in the, matter, in which they stated that they were of opinion that the' original plans were more suitable to local requirements than those of the Dunedin college It was decided to appoint a deputation to wait upon the Minister for Education (the Hon br. rowlds) m respect to the matter
