ATHLETICS.

The Labour Day sports held in the Domain on Wednesday wero particularly successful, as far as the contests were concerned, but tho management was lax. - The publie simply trooped over the running-ground, and consequently greatly hindered the progress of the sports. The Labour Day Sports Committee have surely by now had sufficient experience of this kind of thing, which happens every year; and they arc in a measure to blame for not making arrangements to prevent it. Their sports are not the only ones that are affected by such management. People who enjoy a good athletic meeting will think twice before they attend other, amateur sports meetings. Tho Domain Cricket Ground is an ideal- place for any sport, for a hundred thousand people could throng its banks and everyone of them see. There is absolutely no excuse . for getting right on to the- grounds. Some of the races wero well contested. F. 0.. Grantvillc won two events, namely, the 100 yds amateur handicap, from 6yds, in 10 l-55., and the quarter-mile (amateur), from the 16yds mark, in 54 l-ss. C. D. Bolton won the one mile open handicap from the 30yds mark. W. Huckstep was second from scratch. He ran a good race, but did not have a sprint left in him at the finish or he might have won. He showed, however, that lie can still run a fair mile. A meeting of the. Auckland Amateur Athletic and Cycling Club was held recently, and it was decided to hold a spring carnival. A.good programme has been drawn up, consisting of the following events: —100 yds handicap (youths under 19 years), 220 yds secondary schools handicap, 100 yds handicap,22.oyds handicap, 440 yds handicap, half-mile handicap, one mile handicap, 220 yds hurdles ha.ii- ' dicap, high-jump handicap, half-mile bicycle handicap and three-mile bicycle handicap (cash prizes), drop-ikicking and placekicking competitions. Last year, it will be remembered, the carnival had to lie abandoned. owing to the lack of interest displayed by the members. Let us hope there will be a changes and to enable Auckland to win back' its place amongst, the athletic bodies. " In Dunedin, -as well as in Christchurch and Wellington, athletics are making tip., lost ground, and it behoves the Auckland athletes to pull together, and make the proposed ■ meeting a success. An endeavour is being made to enlarge? the membership, and in this rcspeot the club officials , are meeting with a very fair amount of success; and, in . fact, there are indications of a revival of in- • terest in athletics. At a meeting of thecommittee of the club, lie-Id last evening, it ' was decided to hold tho carnival on Victoria ' Park on December 22. Another committee 1 meeting will bo held on Tuesday next, at aquartcr past five p.m., when final arrangements will be made. The local Amateur Athletic and Cycling Club have at last received their share of the ! profit derived from tho Shrubb-Duffy tour, tho amount being £4 18s 9d.
