MR. HENRY LEPPER. Mb. Hk.ytiy Leffkr, who lias occupied the position of postmaster in charge of the ; Northcote Post Office for several years past, died rather suddenly at his residence, Northcote, at half-past ten o'clock on Thursday night. Deceased was in his usual health ; up to half-past five p.m. of that day, but. ; had been attended by Dr. Player for, some 1 time for heart trouble, which, was the cause of death. Banks, for some years officer 3 commanding the Auckland volunteer disI trict and an old Imperial officer. • Deceased, who was in his 28th year, was at the time , of his death on active service at Necruch, with the 78th Battery Royal Field Artili lory, to which arm of the service he be- - came attached while serving in the South African campaign. Prior to leaving Auek- ' land as a member of the. Second New Zealand Contingent, Mr. Banks was in the ' employ of Messrs. Sargood, Son, and Eweu, ; and took an active interest in the volunteer movement, having in turn been associated • with the College Rifles and Auckland ; Mounted Rifles, holding the commission of lieutenant with the latter corps up to the i time of his departure with the colonials for ■ the Boer war. After serving with the • Second Contingent in South Africa he join- ' ed the Sixth Contingent, and that he was 1 recognised as a smart and capable officer j may be gathered from the fact that while ; at the front lie was attached to the 78th Battery Royal Field Artillery during the j campaign, and saw considerable service with ■ the Imperial force. Deceased always had ■ an inclination to enter on it military career, ! and gave every promise of earning distinci tion in his adopted profession. The news of Mr. Banks' death will be beard with keen regret by a large circle of personal ' friends and volunteer acquaintances in Auckland.
