Business in the local fruit and produce markets has been very quiet during the past week, and there is but little alteration to report in values. Ample supplies of potatoes came to hand from Australia, but the demand was rather slack. In onions the heavy stocks held have only been lightly reduced, but there is an upward tendency in prices. There was no change in the values of grain and fodder. In dairy produce the supplies of butter and eggs were, about up to the usual, and the demand for both was unlimited. There was practically no cheese offered, whilst bacon and hams were scarce. Poultry was in much shorter supply than last week, and prices again, ruled high. The fruit market was very firm for all dessert varieties. Only moderate shipments of apples, passion-fruit, and mandarins arrived by the Victoria from. Sydney on Monday to a strong demand, and consequently high prices ruled. Local supplies consisted principally of lemons, consignments of which were heavy, and only moderate prices were realised. There was practically no demand for Poor Man's oranges, and only fair prices were realised for Whangarei sweet oranges. In Island fruits the shipment per Atua from Tonga, landed on Thursday, was on the small side, and. the market being strong, high prices were obtained. Vegetables of the most salable sorts were in short supply, and brought high prices throughout. Young pigs were in demand far beyond supply. " [BY TELEGRAPH.—PRESS ASSOCIATION.] Christciiorch, Friday. In the local wheat market a few inquiries have come to hand and a. little business has l>een done locally and with the North Island. Most of the grain changing hands has been, out of stocks held by merchants, who are inclined to unload in view of the weaker tendency of prices. Offers hive been received from millers, who are prepared to give 3s at 2d and 2Jd stations for f.a.<j. Tuscan and Hunters, but farmers are not. yet inclined to accept. 'Jfie only sale reported is "of a small lot of pearl at 3s Id at a Id station.
