INSURANCE RATES.
PROPOSED REVISION OF THE TARIFF. [BY TELEGRAPH.—TRESS ASSOCIATION.] Wei.llvgtox. Friday. The Post says" Business circles in. Wellington are'much interested at present ' < a movement which is afloat to raise the ,-nte of insurance on fire risks. Insurance men generally combine in the statement that the cutting of rates which resulted 011 the institution of the State Fire . Insurance Department has not ' been productive of business which can in any way be regarded as sound, and it is even hinted that the necessities of the situation have {perhaps only in isolated cases) led to a certain amount of laxity in the obseivance of the 'tariff' agreed upon by the various companies. Be that as it may, steps are being taken at the present moment by certain persons interested in insurance to endeavour to bring about a revision of the tariff in favour of the companies. So far the movement has not progressed beyond its initial stages, but developments are expected in a few days. It is understood that the Minister in charge of the State Fire Insurance Department (the Hon. A. Pitt) has been tentatively approached in regard to the proposals, but that he has declined to have anything to do with the movement.''
