SUPPLYING WATER TO THE HOSPITAL.

REDUCTION BY CITY COUNCIL. Thk Auckland Hospital and Charitable Aid Board recently asked the Auckland \ City Council to make a reduction in the water charges for the hospital The •; Streets Committee Reported at the meeting of the Council last evening, recommending that the charge for the conveniences at the hospital be reduced from 24s to 10s per convenience per annum, Mr. A. J. Entrican asked how the committee had arrived at the decision when ho Council had previously jiegatived a similar proposal. The Mayor said so long as they were ■ ■ satisfied they were being paid a reasonable ,y • marge for the use of the city drain, the '"' committee thought it reasonable to make the recommendation, which was a fair and reasonable one. (Hear, hear.) Mr. Entrican said the question was: Should a reduction he made outside the city, which other people inside the city ;,. could not get. The hospital was supported by a rate and all contributed lo it. and the reduction would only relieve ratepayer era outside the city. He did not see why *;■'.-■ any exception should lie made of the hospital. Mr. L. J, Bagnall said there was a feeling on the- Hospital Hoard that the Council was unreasonable in its charges. The hospital was charged the same as the r Parnell borough for the water. Mr. Entrican moved. "Th.it the mat|V ter be deferred until the extra supply of water had been secured from Waltakerei." Mr. C. J. Pair, in seconding the amend- ' ment, said they should protect their own ■ ratepuyeiti by making a. reasonable charge, "id "make'money out of other people." It seemed to be subsidising the ratepayers of Auckland province, and that was a wrong principle. . < ;.'• -'' After further discussion the amendment I wrong principle. the report adopted.
