The Zulu sub-chief, Mjongwe, and two other men, have been hanged for their part in the murder of Inspector Hunt and Trooper Armstrong near Richmond, in February. ~ Mjongwe was a headman of the tribe responsible for the murder of Inspector Hunt and Trooper Armstrong. He received the inspectors rifle and revolver as . his share of the things taken from the murdered men. When the trial of the murderers took place in April,' i Mjongwe and the two, other natives were, ill, and their cases were adjourned. In his defence, Mjongwe said he had tried to prevent the men of his tribe attacking the police party. The blood vengeance taken upon the tribe makes a striking record. Immediately after the murder, two of the tribe were arrested, tried by court-martial, and shot; a few days later men of the Moelis tribe caught and killed three others; 12 were executed in April; six others were condemned to death, but their sentences were commuted to imprisonment for life, and now three more have been hanged. This makes 20 killed and executed and six imprisoned, and one was killed by Inspector Hunt in the fray— a total of 27 accounted out of about 40 naa total of 27 accounted for out of about 40 natives who took part in the ambuscade.
