The arrival of the Suffolk and Star of New Zealand from Liverpool, the JPakeha from London, the Breiz Izel from West Australia, the Atua from Sydney, Fiji, Samoa, and Tonga makes plenty of work on the wharves. . The latter had on board 2000 cases of oranges and 2000 cases of bananas, both arriving to a good market. The bananas are in excellent condition, but unfortunately the same cannot be said of the oranges, many of which are over-ripe and not marketable. The Pakeha brings the first of the new season's catch of fresh herrings, herrings in tomato sauce, and kippered herrings. :.-.-■ v Seeded raisins have considerably advanced in price since our last.' - American canned fruits and salmon remain steady, but an upward move in both these might, be experienced at any moment. Metals : Prices remain firm for most lines at last advances; there is no immediate prosi pect of any drop. Importers are experiencing great •. difficulty in getting their orders executed, on account of the enormous demand in Great Britain for shipbuilding pur- . poses. W[ : \ ' ; •." ■ _t »ifc- : ?"-' ;■*.--'vi._- :jf -j ;,^-^' Fencing Wire: English wire has again ad- ' vanced in price; a further rise of 5s per ton has been advised,, ; Tin: Advices to hand show a further rise on ingot tin. ' •-/.,'- Linseed Oil: A rise of Id per gallon has been notified. White Lead: In sympathy with the improvement in the price of pig-lead, white lead has advanced another 20s per ton. Timber: There is no change to report in kauri timber. All the "mills are kept busy, working full time, there being sufficient orders on hand to use up all the available logs, but no further movement in prices. The demand from Australia continue"!. White pine is also in good demand, all the mills lx>ing kept going ," at full time. Totara: There is a plentiful supply, the demand being quite equal to it. . Potatoes: The arrivals ex Wanaka total 586 sacks; as most./Of these are seed, they •'..■; will be disposed of readily, as the demand is good. There is also a strong inquiry for Up-to-Date seed, and American Burbanks are still selling freely. Most of the farmers are planting late this year, in the hope of escaping the blight. Onions: There is no change in price. A fair demand has set in from the South for Californian, which are not keeping too well. Maize: No fresh supplies to hand since our last report. The market is not overstocked, and has now recovered from the slight, fall early in the week. All the soft and indifferent quality parcels have been disposed of. There is a good inquiry for Horsetooth seed maize, of which there is very little offering. . Fowl wheat is slightly firmer, and a fairly good demand exists, with stocks on the light side. Oats: The local market is unchanged. The Wanaka has arrived from the South with 4962 sacks, which came to a rather bare market. Oamaru Gartons are very good, and a strong demand exists for this special grade. Our latest advices from South notify that there has been a very good inquiry, and a fair amount of business has been done. In « addition to the 10,000 sacks shipped from the Bluff to London, there has been another inquiry for a considerable quantity for the same market, but so far nothing definite has been fixed. Milling Wheat: The same advices report that the rejection of the reciprocal tariff with Australia may tend to bring business about, as millers will soon require to replenish their stocks, which have been allowed to run down. Fungus: There is not much coming forward, the demand being quite equal to the supply, with no change in price. Flax: There is no further move on the market. All arrivals are sold as they come to hand, at last rates. Tow is slightly easier, but there is no difficulty in disposing of any lines that, reach this market. . Kauri Gum: The arrivals for 11 days of October total 230 tons. The market continues steady for most classes. There is a scarcity of good rescraped ordinary, for which "there is a continued demand. East Coast is in slightly better request, but the high prices demanded tend to cramp business. Block gum is moving off well, without any appreciable alteration in values. Bush gam is not wanted. Black chips and dust. sell freely, but at a slightly reduced price. Ordinary chips and dust are not salable. Indian Tea : Our reports from Calcutta inform us that a better selection from tne Dooars will he offered at the next sale, and it is expected that the quality will show some improvement. At last sale demand was keen for all descriptions, buyers being forced to pay a considerable advance on last quotations, and teas from all districts with any pretence to quality were eagerly competed for. The Persian buyers are in the market for green tea, which, however, must be of high quality in the cup to suit them. They have recently bought up such teas at prices rather Mow last year's for same ;iuality, as the Russian"buyers, who formerly competed, have imposed a new requirement in point of colour of the leaf, which thev now want of a dull sage green, corresponding to the hue of China Moyures. Tim is a verv difficult thing to secure in steammade teas of the Japan type, which, for economy's sake, is the only variety which Indian producers can at present produce. , Ceylon Tea: At last sale demand was jood" for all kinds, and price* were steady. The quality of finest high-growns has been very indifferent for some time past, but from now on the quality should improve, and we expect to see some fine flavoury upcountry teas offered at. the next and future sales.
