DEVONPORT BOROUGH. COUNCIL.

W i A meeting of the Devonport Borough Council was held in the Council Chambers last evening. Mr. Wm. Handley (DeputyMayor) was" in the chair, and the following members were also present: —Messrs. R. Logan, jun., D. McLean, E. J. Osborne, C. C. Dacve, E. R. Ford, W. Timewell. . A; Magistrate's Judgment: The town, . clerk reported - that a . resident - who had been charged, with keeping goats at North Shore had been lined Is and costs, and given 14 days to remove his goats. He said that the magistrate (Mr. Kettle) had made the comment that the by-law prohibiting the keeping of goats within the borough was absurd. The magistrate had also suggested, said the town clerk, that defendant should keep milking sheep, as there was no by-law to prohibit such. The Council decided to forward a copy of the town clerk's report to the Minister" for Justice and Mr. E. W. Alison, M.H.R., with a letter taking exception to the magistrate's comment. Smoke Nuisance: In reply to a. letter • sent by the Council, Bond Brothers, timber merchants, of Queen's Parade, wrote stat- ; ing that they could give no explanation in. respect to the alleged smoke nuisance, , as it did not exist. They further intimated i that when the Council could prove the nuii sauce in a Court of law they then would be : only to pleased to fall in with any reasoni able demand the Council might make. The letter was received, i Building Permits: Five building permits , were granted. Lighting: In a letter, the Auckland^ Gas ; Company stated their regret that the Council had found cause for a general complaint , as to the lighting supplied. They further pointed out that the company had on sevei ral occasions lately made tests and found the pressure on the North Shore to be quite i good. ■ . „ . Tender: The tender of J. J. Craig, of • 14s a ton for coal, was accepted. Work to be Done: The following items [ recommended by the Streets and Works Committee were confirmed by the Council: . —That a cesspit and crossing be put down , in Vauxhall Road ; that the Council extend , the sewer in the Domain 70ft, and that Mr. Benjamin connect from that point; that . Williams-street be not formed at present; . that Mr. Boylan. be appointed enl gineer. The question of alterations in cont nection with , bathing boxes in Bath-street | was referred to the Streets Committee. < Camping Grounds: The town clerk? re* I commended that ho camping be allowed on . places under the Council's control at Stan- , ley Bay and Narrow Neck. The Council \ agreed with the suggestion, and decided that notices to that effect be put up at ■ t each place. , A Morgue: The Legal and Finance Committee recommended the erecting of ■ a } morgue on the Council's property in Church- ' street, and that plans and specifications be prepared. It was decided that the recommendation be handed over to the Streets i Committee to report. The clerk was instructed ' to inform the City Council that ! the Council intended building a morgue for J the borough. .
