SPORTING.

NEW ZEALAND SUCCESSES A\ RANDAVICK. Sydney papers to hand bring full details of the running on the first and second days of the Australian Jockey Club's Spring Meeting. The following excerpt is from the Sydney Morning Herald: — THE METROPOLITAN STAKES. When the numbers went up for the mile and a-half race it was found that 25 horses were to engage in the contest for supremacy. There was an inter-State flavour about the field, which included representatives from New Zealand, Victoria, and Queensland, and the New Zealand mare Solution: held her place in the market quotations right up to the close of business, when the short price of 2 to 1 was' the best available about the daughter of Soulf. The field was a wellconditioned one. and when they ranged up I at the barrier Waikato occupied the inner berth, .and in extended order were Luciana, Raeburn, Rosemead, Cockney Boy, and Binnia; the central division included Poseidon and Solution. Without delay the barrier was released to' an excellent despatch, from which Waikato, Clonsilla, and Solution were the first to show, but, ere a furlong had been travelled, the favourite drew out, followed, by her compatriot, Savoury, but the latter, on pacemaking bent, was in front as ■.they, swept out of the straight; and at the mile post had an advantage of nearly five lengths from Solution, whose nearest attendants were Simnel, Lochino, Maximize, and Merveil. Simnel dropped out of it as they negotiated the back stretch, the pace being very solid, but his mission having been accomplished as they neared the halfmile post Savoury beat a retreat, leaving the favourite in command from Maximize and Famous. " The i latter drew up to the girths of ' Solution as they came round the bend, where Maximize, Bluster, and Poseidon were in the wake of the leading pair, and in that order they turned into the home stretch, excitement being now at fever heat. Solution drew clear from Famous, and had a couple of lengths advantage from the son of Grafton at tho,,, distance, whence the Derby, winner came with a brilliant run, passing Famous at the half-distance, but the beautiful New Zealand mare was still going easily in front, and galloping it out in "most taking manner there was a gap of five lengths between her and the" Derby winner when the post was reached. On returning to scale Solution met with a cordial reception, . and Poseidon • also was greeted with applause. ■ Famous ran a great horse, while The Bairn, Maximize, Rosemead, and Proceed were clustered behind the placed horses, but Noreen was buried in the ruck all the way. ' There was no loitering on the track, for, the time, 2m. 33i5., is only a second slower than the record for the race registered by Maniapoto last year. :'■-;-•: THE BREEDERS' PLATE. ' Great interest was centred in the first two-year-old' race- of the season— the Breeders' Plateto-contest; which 20 youngsters were saddled ; up. : It was a splendid, field, and worthy of the occasion. Again the New Zealand contingent' supplied, the favourite, Boniform, a ; handsome brother to Sungod, who was one of Mr. Stead's successful team last season, and so great was the demand for the colt that even money was the best to be. got at the last .moment, while the next fancied were. Grafton colt Assumption, the. Brakpan colt'Haakon, and the Maltster filly Maltine. .Orzil's, Daughter: and Mountain King were fractious, and broke through the barrier,'the Matter bolting for a couple of .furlongs" before he was got under control; but. eventually- the field was— the exception; of , Assumption, who hung at the post, and lost nearly half-a-dozen lengthssent away On fairly good terms. Easter Egg was smartest off the mark, and, with Mountain.King,' Blackmarki and Cissi in his wake, the son of Orzil carried his field along until fairly in line for home. Boniform was' just behind leading division as they came round the end, and when Easter Egg began to get weary 'at the distance Mountain King was left in charge, with Mai tine, Haakon, and Boniform in hot,, pursuit.;- Gaining on his opponents at every stride the New Zealander wore "them down like a tradesman, and defeated, Mountain King by a narrow margin after a sharp engagement, . Boniform is a mere pony, in stature, his height not being more than 14.3., He is, however, a monument of quality, and of his thorough gameness there cannot be a doubt. , , '. AUSTRALIAN * RACING. 5". ??}?. e. r , fI JP.h-—Press;.AssociatiOD.—UopyngiH. - Melbourne; October 8. Gladsome* still 1 displays lameness, find it : is thought unlikely that the New Zealand mare, will ever race again. • ' Solution and Czarovitch are quoted, equal favourites for tho Caulfiold Cup at 8 to 1. Dyed Garments has been backed for £4000 Booran for £2000, and Noreen.for £1500. ' For the Melbourne Cup "£SOO has been taken about Poseidon. ' The, A.J.C. Derby winner is now quoted at 10 to 1. Fowling Piece was backed at 1000 to 50. -AUCKLAND- TROTTING CLUB'S : SPRING MEETING. Mr. P. W.
