The Australian Jockey Club inaugurated s their spring meeting at Randwick today in 5 beautiful weather. There was a very large 1 attendance, His Excellency the Governor " (Sir H. Rawson) being amongst the visitors, 5 which included many prominent sportsmen 5 from all over the Commonwealth, while New Zealand claimed a prominent man in Mr. G. - G. Stead. 3 In the decision of the opening event—the " Hurdle Race—the New Zealand division had a the satisfaction of seeing a horse from Maoriland lead the field home, but that was the only success that fell to them during, the I afternoon. ' A field of half-a-dozen went to the post s for the Derby, for which Collarit held his place in popular esteem, no better price 5 than 4 to 1 being offered about him at the 5 close of operations. The favourite flattered t the hopes of his admirers up to the discs tance; but Poseidon headed him in the run l to the post, and a victory went down to the credit of the latter. A deal of interest was centred in the Spring Stakes, for which event Mr. Stead claimed a double string to his bow with ' Porcelain and Isolt. From an excellent start Collarit was the , first to show in front, but Huascar was on ' terms with the favourite at tho stand, and the New Zealand colt led out of the straight a couple of lengths in advance of Collarit. Huascar increased the lead along the back ' from Collarit, Banzai and Poseidon following Approaching Kensington Collarit dashed away, and at the half-mile had an advantage of five lengths over Huascar, and at the bend the favourite had three* lengths [ advantage of Poseidon and Antonious. Huas- . car fell back beaten at the distance, at ) which point Poseidon made a fine run, and the son of Positano wearing down the favourite ho came on and won by three lengths, ' tho same distance separating the second and ' third. Dividend and Emir were first away, but Porcelain was in the van at the stand, Dividend, Isolt, and Lady Wallace following. Porcelain led at the mile post by a couple of lengths, with Dividend and Isolt next. Porcelain increased his advantage to the seven furlongs, where Isolt closed up. At the half-mile only half-a-length separated Porcelain and Dividend; with Isolt and Lady Wallace a similar distance away. Porcelain led to the straight, Lady Wallace being still fourth. At the Leger stand Lady Wallace made a fine run on the outside, and romping over her opponents won easily by four lengths, three lengths separating Isolt from Dividend. Porcelain was fifth.
