LABOUR MARKET.

Thk September issue of the Journal of th* Labour Department refers to the Auckland labour market as follows: —

Retail: Trad© has been very favourable. The milking season starting, the opening up of farm work, and the winter being practically over, will tend to increase business, and the prospects for the ensuing month are excellent: The butchers complain of the price of stock, holding that even at the heavy prices at which the meat, is offered for sale no profit is made. This was the only complaint met with, and in view of its importance to the public, as well as the trade, this matter will soon call for serious consideration.

Building Trades: Carpenters and bricklayers have been, fairly' well employed. Plumbers have been very busy, and painters have been fully employed. Engineering Trades: For many month* past the trade lias been dull, but there has lately teen a decided improvement. Boot Trade (factories): Business is good, and all workers are fully employed. Clothing Trade: The clothing, shirt, and underclothing factories tee particularly busy, but shop tailoring is quiet. Saddlery: There are a number of competent hands out of work. Coachbuilding: The , excellent conditions of last month still obtain.

Timber Industry: The mills are very busy and good bushmen are scarce. Furniture Trades : All factories are busy. Gum Industry: Gum-sorting and grading has been very quiet, presumably owing to the wet season experienced. Unskilled Labour: Work has been found for all applicants able and willing to undertake heavy work. Although no less titan 226 men (with 89 dependents) were assisted to work, the majority were from other countries, and the number of applicants for work at.the office was not so great as in the previous winter months. There' is a great demand for farm hands, but suitable applicants are very scarce.
