BOROUGH OF MOUNT EDEN-

POLICY OF THE COUNCIL.

The members of (lie Mount Eden Borough Council who were elected on Saturday last will hold office until next- .April, when in accordance with the law, nil the councillors of boroughs will go out of office. There will thus be another mayoral election and election for councillors in seven months' time. This fart was communicated to a H.'.hald reporter who waited on the Mayor (Mr. Oliver Nicholson) yesterday. and asked for a statement of the policy likely lo be pursued by the Council, as nine out of the 12 councillors were members of the old Road Board. .Mr. Nicholson said lie could not say definitely what would he done in the matter of a general policy of improvements for the borough. I lie interim would lie mainly taken up in putting the affairs of the borough in order and unravelling the complications they were in. c "What are the complications?"

"There was 110 provision made in the law for the new borough taking over the affairs of the old Road Board," replied the Mayor. The consequence was that they would have to re-enact the by-laws and restrike the rates as soon as . possible. The first matter that would be attended to would be the question of the extension of the tramways along the Mount Eden and Mount Roskill Roads, by the Council applying to the Government for the necessary Order-in-Council. The Order-in-Council had been already prepared, and was ready for signature when the old Road Board ceased to exist, and in the interim there had been no authority existing capable of signing the document. Consequently that matter had been left in abeyance.

In reply to a question whether he intended to put before the Council any large proposals, so that the ratepayers could give their opinion on the matter at the next election, .Mr. 1 Nicholson said he did not think there would be any large | scheme, . but the general : policy of the jKoad Board would probably be one of the questions. The majority of the councillors, he believed, favoured a continuation of the i'oad Board's policy. However, the question of drainage would have to be considered at an early date, but lie did not think any scheme would he brought Forward until the Auckland City scheme had been fully formulated. f The question was a most important one. The area, supervised by the Council was between that of other local bodies, and the drainage was dependent on the actios of the. .surrounding districts to some extent, for the outlet would have to lie through other districts. In conclusion, Mr. Nicholson said lie was pleased at the personnel of the elected Council, which was an excellent one, and the interests of the borough would be well looked after. The first meeting will be held on Wednesday evening. ,
