CHAMPIONSHIP MEETING.

Christchuboh, Thursday. The semi-final of the New Zealand golf championship was played to-day at the Shirley links. The weather was fine, but a stiff breeze blew across the links from the north-east. S. H. Gollan, of Napier, defeated K. Tareha, also of Napier, by two up and one to play. Both played rather indifferently in the earlier stages of the game, their putting being particularly weak. During the- second part die game, however, Gollan played some magnificent long shots, and made the 13th hole, 440 yds. in three,, which is a record for the hole. Tareha played a very good close game', but got into difficulties towards the end. Seventeen holes were plaved, seven were won by Gollan, five by Tareha, and five were halved. W. T. D. Harman, of Christchurch, defeated J. C. Bid will, of Wairarapa, by two up and one to play, after a very evenlyplayed game. To-morrow Harman and Gollan will play off for the championship over a 36-hole course.

At the annual meeting of the New Zealand Golf Council to-night, the balancesheet showed a credit ot £16 lis. It was decided that at next championship meeting an open championship of New Zealand be inaugurated, to be decided by 36 holes, medal play, open to any professional or amateur in any part of the world, and that monetary prizes of £25 and £10 be given to the most successful professionals. It was decided that next meeting be held at- Napier.
