TAURANGA AS A HEALTH RESORT.

Sir,— often wonder t why' it is that the Government through its Tourist Department does nothing to bring the above beautiful maritime town and district prominently be--' fore the public as a. health* resort. I suppope it is because there is no railway, and therefore no quid pro quo for doing so. The town is beautifully situated upon a lovely bay, which is more like an inland lake, the; streets are morlernly laid out, ,are wide and cut one another at right-angles. The country is not yet settled, and hence is very picturesque and beautiful. The view from th« town commands a radius north, -west, and south of at least 40 miles; in fact, I should say there is no finer view in New Zealand. There are a good many roads formed, and though not metalled" (metal being very scarce), they are usually drv and firm, and : splendid to either ride or drive upon. : The climate is one of the best in New Zealand, very little wind, a small rainfall, a little, frost about midwinter. and sunshine galore. Accommodation is excellent; there are four or five good hotels and up-to-date boardinghouses. There is fishing (trout and son), shooting (quail and pheasant) and deer- ; stalking, tennis, cricket, boating, bowls, golf, etc., can. also be had, as well as riding and driving, there being well-equipped livery stables. The district is exceedingly healthy, for though the population is about 900 pakchas and a good many natives, still the doctors seem fo have very little to do. In fact. I fuel sure !here is no place in New • Zealand better .suited to anyone convalescing from disease or requiring change and rest front business worries. Tbavellek,
