BOXING.

The forthcoming Auckland provincial boxing championships, to be held on July 27 and 28, are creating great interest amongst enthusiasts arid competitors alike, and it is anticipated that the Northern Association's carnival will be the means uof bringing out several clever young boxers in addition, to practically all last year's champions. The championships will be: held- in the Federal Hall, owing to the Management Committee being unable to secure either the Opera House or His Majesty's Theatre; which are engaged. To add further interest to the championships, F. Dyer, present bantamweight champion, has offered to donate a valuable trophy for the best scientific display of boxing during the, carnival. : Entries for the Northern Boxing Association's provincial championships close finally this evening with the secretary, Mr. R. Kee-nan, at the club rooms, Victoria-street. The club's honorary medical officer will attend to examine competitors. C. R. Cotterill, who succeeded in winning several club competition tournaments, will be found among the light-weights this year, and reports say that ho will prove a solid opponent in this division. He has also one or two clever pupils who intend competing for the bantam championship, notably Watkins, who is said to have made wonderful improvement since last year's performance. .

The secretary of the Kobukohu Boxing Association (sub-centre of the Northern) has wired Mr. Kecnan advising him' that Hokianga will be represented in the feather and heavy weight contests. There is also the probability of one or two men Dominating from ; Paeroa and Whangarei. The New Zealand Council has ruled that all amateurs outside- affiliated clubs desiring to compete in championships must apply to the local secretary.,who,, being satisfied of their bona-fidcs, will grant permission to them to compete. In the case of any Auckland amateurs not being members of the Northern Association, and wishing to compete at the New Zealand carnival, it will therefore be necessary for them to apply to the local secretary before their applications can bo entertained at Wellington. It would consequently be-better for them to join the Northern Association, which step would entitle them to. compete in any carnival in New Zealand without further payment of membership fees. The committee of the Northern Boxing Association are making an earnest endeavour to raise sufficient funds to send a representative team to the forthcoming New Zealand championships, and if the public will give a loyal support to the forthcoming carnival no difficulty should be experienced in sending the best men available. There is not the slightest doubt that there is plenty of good material here, and that the boxers onlv require the chance to prove themselves. Mr. J. Saxon has'offered to provide two midget boxers to open up the proceedings attho Auckland championships on the 27th and 28th inst., and it is reported they are verv clever and will- provide excellent amusement., - ■ I have not yet; heard from A. J. Blewden as to whether he intends to defend his title of light-weight champion this year. * Maloncy, they say, is preparing very bard with the object of meeting the champion, but it is reported that Blewden is overweight, and may not figure in the ring. _ Pooley also hopes to be pitted against F. Dyer, who won the, bantam championship from him, and is credited with having ventured the opinion that Dyer will not- pull off first honours so easily this year. Dyer has, however, not signified his intention of defending the title, but it is hoped that he will come out. _ _ V S. BroDhy, a middle-weight boxer, and a new addition to the Noifiiern Association, intends competing in this division. He is reported to be a clever boxer, and that he will prove a doughty opponent to the present champion should the latter defend the title. Lewis, Bvophy, Bourke, Power, and others should compel Donovan to show his verv best form to hold the championship. The Wellington Boxing Association strongly approves of the suggestion of the New South Wales Sports Club to send a team to England early next year to represent the Australasian colonies in the British championships, provided that the arrangement of selection is made on a fair and equitable basis. 'The association will give the matter further consideration after the New Zealand, championships. • , ' ' - ; Batchelor. the Aew acq lander, who is preparing to fight S. Russell at the Gaiety, is a likclv looking chap, says Amateur," in the Sydney. Referee. Batchelor won .the iieavv-wcight amateur championship of Canterbury last year. • V. \.
