ATHLETICS.
J.Gredden, of Queensland, has intimated his willingness to try conclusions with any man, in tho world at an "all-round" athletic contest. ' A Melbournite is offering to back Gredden against anyone who accepts the challenge. Gredden's performances are :as follows: —Hop, step, 47ft lin; running high jump, sft 9in; running long jump, 22ft lOjfin; standing high jump, sft Bin (Australian record); standing broad jump, 13ft sin (Australian -record); two broad jumps, 26ft sin- (Australian record), world's record 26ffc Biin; three standing jumps, 39ft 6£in (Australian record); pole vault, 10ft 3in; back jump, lift 4in; two back jumps, 19ft llin ; three back jumps, 29ft 6in; throwing 561b weight, 27ft 4in; putting 281b shot, 28ft lin; putting 161b shot, 37ft sin ; throwing 71b weight, 93ft (this is a world's record); throwing 161b hammer, 116 ft; flat running, won innumerable short races; hurdle racing, 21 firsts out of 27 starts, always scratch man except on four occasions, and conceded starts up to 21yds.
There are indications that the young ladies who are accomplished in the art of Highland dancing are to be prominent at the championship athletic sports meeting in connection 'with the Exhibition (says a Christchurch writer). Several Duncdin girls have already stated their intention of competing, and some from the North Island are also said to be coming down. To win a championship of New Zealand is the chief aim of the young ladies, but as some intend coming long distances it is proposed to increase the prizes. ' •
