BRITISH IMMIGRANTS.

Now that the current of British immigration is seemingly. turning once more towards New Zealand it would be well if all colonists bore in mind the .difficulties under which newcomers labour until they become what is termed "colonised." There is no doubt that the colony greatly needs British immigrants of the stamp that is now arriving, and that they are heartily welcome among us whatever their walk in life may be. And all old colonists know that an industrious and steady man, when he has got over the strangeness and the hardships inseparable from being transplanted from one side of the world to the other, will not only do well but will learn to love the new conditions. Colonists who return to their old Home usually feel as strange and out of place as any newcomer can ever feel in New Zealand, even to the home-sickness that is among the hardest of ailments to bear. And as almost all colonials return Home''-under a misconception of what they are going back to, even although they go to their own birthplace and to the place where they passed many years of their lives, so almost all immigrants come to ; anew country under a misconception of what they are coming to, and have a tendency to feel temporarily disappointed in consequence. They should remember that they are 'not the first to come to New; Zealand with hearts that turned fondly to the old life and to the old ways of living, and that this is a good country to, live in if a man will only settle down to do his best in it. There is no better land ;. in the world—to.-. those who learn to look upon it as their home, and who see the sun shining as well as the rain falling. And there are none who will proclaim this more heartily in the near future than those who are now facing the troubles and trials inseparable from the making of a new life in a new land. -
