EXPLOITING A NEW FIELD. A discovery of petroleum lias been made at Waiotapu, near Rotorua, with which it is connected by a good road. The find is upon the property of Mr. Win. Rogers*, a well-known Rotorua business man, who has had a parly of men employed prospecting and testing the ground for oil for some time past. The property consists of 1000 acres, and Mr. Rogers holds a title over it, granted from the Crown Lands Board. Recent developments have induced Mr. Rogers to bring samples of the oil to Auckland" for examination and analysis. The samples were taken from places where the oil exuded freely from the ground in several parts of the property. They have been subjected to eminent authorities, and although precise details have, not been disclosed it is understood that the samples are true petroleum of high specific gravity. Mr. Rogers is at present in Auckland for (he purposes of making preliminary arrangements for the exploitation of the find, and probably more will be heard of the matter in a day or two.
