FUNERAL OF DR. A. G. PURCHAS.
The funeral of the late Dr. Arthur Guyon. Purchas took place yesterday, when a very large number followed the remains of the deceased from "Flintoft," Epsom, to- St. Mark's Church, Remtieni, and thence to the Purewa cemetery. The funeral left Epsom at two o'clock, and proceeded to the church, where a memorial service was conducted. lie Rev. A. Fowler read the opening sentences, and Canon Mac Murray read the lessons. The choir of St. Mark's Church, assited by members of St. Barnabas' Church choir, chanted the 90th Psalm, and sang tnc beautiful hymn, "Christ Will Gather in His Own.'' The servicc was very impressive. Mr. V. Rice, an old friend of deceased, presided at the organ. The church was well filled. The chief mourners were : Judge and Mrs. Seth-Smith, Mrs. Cooke, Mr. and Mrs. F. W. Brookfield, Mr. and Mrs. H. Roche, Dr. and Mrs. Challinor Purchas, Air. and Airs. Claude Purchas, Miss Purchas, Mr. and Mrs. C. Kissling, and a number of grandchildren. Among those present were representatives of the clergy of the Auckland Clergy Association, including Archdeacon Gilder, Canon use'den, Canon Nelson, Canon Gould, and the Revs. J. K. Davis, P. Smallfield, Carver, P. Williams, Munro, G. Maunsell, Smith, H. B. Wingfield, and E. J. McFarlund, Sir Maurice O'Rorke, Air. V. E. Rice (secretary of the Education Bpard), the Hon. E. Mitehelson, Mr. E. Langguth, Colonel Shepherd, Professor Brown, Mr. J. W. Tibbs (Auckland Grammar School), D. Goklie, C. Cooper, and R. Leslie Hunt (Jubilee Institute for the Blind). J. H. Upton, W. Cochrane, P. Peacock, N. Peacock, 0. Hay, J. P. Kempthorne, T. A. Walker, Mesdames Calder and Judd, and Drs. Lewis. Marsack. Roberton, Dudley, Grant,. Inglis, Watson. Sharman, and others. Those present at the burial at the cemetery mostly comprised the near relations of the deceased. The burial service was read by Archdeacon .Calder. At the special request of the deceased there were no floral emblems, but the coffin was covered with a number of fern leaves. The family j have received a large number of messages i of condolence from all parte of the colony." •
