OPENING UP THE PROVINCE.
The unanimity . and enthusiasm 1 which characterised the proceedings yesterday at the conference of railway leagues augur hopefully for the ' success of the new movement which has been started to secure the opening up of the province by means of 1 railways. Under the political sys- 1 tem which now prevails in the 1 colony the only possible way of ob- i taining recognition of pressing pub- | lie works is by organisation and an ■ inflexible determination to leave no - stone unturned until the desired end ' is attained. Any othei course is 1 simply to court neglect-. But no ( Government can afford to go on ignoring claims which are pressed on its attention by a. large and impor- 1 tant section of the community firmly 1 resolved on having its just griev- ( ances remedied. The case which was made out by the speakers yes- 1 terday is so clear and strong that it is impossible to imagine it can fail i to secure the most favourable con- 1 sideration from the Government and : Parliament. Indeed, so unanswer- c able is it that one is amazed that the province should have remained so long inactive or indifferent in c the matter. However, the time has j now arrived for the adoption of a s vigorous forward policy, and we are s confident that the movement so 1. successfully begun yesterday, if only { continued with the same zeal and £ unanimity which have marked its initiation, will prove of incalculable benefit in promoting the general ad- * vancernent and prosperity of the « province. 1
