Nulli Secundus tailed off last. Time, 2m. ■55 4-ss. King Edward witnessed the race. Though there is probably not a very wide colonial interest iii English racing, the Derby run annually at Epsom is still regarded the. world over as the blue riband of the turf, and" though people may not bet a shilling on the result the, associations that hang round the time-honoured race are such as to at all times interest those who follow events of the turf. The fact that a descendant of the New Zealand-bred Garbine succeeded in winning the great race is an incident unique in its annals, for it marks the first occasion on which a horse- bred under the Southern Cross has '.sired the winner, and that Auckland should be the birthplace of the sire of the Derby victor is one more honour to go down to the credit of Maoriland. Spearmint, who carried Sir Tatton Sykes' colours to victory in Wednesday's race, was bred by his owner. Being a colt of somewhat massive proportions, Sir Tatton evidently recognised that the patient and considerate course would be necessary, for as a youngster he was only saddled up on three occasions. The race selected for him to make his debut on the turf was the Great Foal Plate, run at Lingfield Park in July, for which he started favourite in a field of nine, and won his race by a head. His next essay was in the Champion Breeders' Plato at Derby, in which event he was easily defeated by Black Arrow. At Newmarket in November he was pulled out for the Richmond Nursery Handicap, in which event he was allotted top weight (9st), and he came home' in fourth place. Spearmint's name does not unfortunately appear amongst the. entrants for the St. Leger Stakes, and he does not claim an engagement in any of the 10,000sovs stakes.
