BIRTHS AND DEATHS.

A SYDNEY RECORD FOR MARCH. The New South Wales Government statistician's report on the vital statistics of Sydney for the month of March shows that during the month 1109 children were born (558 males and 551 females), and 393 persons died (207 males and 191 females), the. excess of births over deaths being 711. The illegitimate births numbered 116, comprising 9.56 per cent, of the total births, which is considered below the average. The birth record is 30 above, and the death record 59 below, the average for March during the previous five years. The resultant birth-rate is 2.09, and the deathrate .75 per thousand, corresponding respectively to annual rates of 25.08 and 9.00 per thousand of population. The number of deaths of children under one year of age was 95, equal to 86 per 1000 births, which compares with 121. the mean rate for the? 1 last decade. The rare for infants is the lowest for that month during ihe last 10 years, l>eing 29 per cent, below the decennial average. Of children under five years of age there were 120 deaths, or 24- per cent, of the total, which is below the average experience of the previous five years.
