AUCKLAND MAYORALTY.
The re-election of Mr. Arthur Myers to the Mayoral chair which he has so ably filled during the past year is a foregone conclusion. He has in every way fulfilled the expectations of the city and has earned the hearty thanks of the various bodies which now control the area to be some day covered by a Greater Auckland. It, is not too much to say that there is no serious opposition to a Mayor of
whom Auckland and its environments j have such great cause to speak well, i while at the same time it is highly j desirable that all his constituents j should not leave the work of electing ! him to one another with the, idea that it is sheer waste of time to walk up to vote. The moment is somewhat opportune to point out the desirability of imposing a heavier penalty than at present exists upon frivolous candidatures. It is quite sound to maintain perfect freedom of candidature, but it is equally ! sound to make candidates who re- ; present practically nobody but them- j selves pay the expense to which they j put a municipality, if not for the unnecessary trouble which they impose upon their fellow-citizens. That, however, is by the way. In complimenting Mr. Myers upon the successful work of his past year of office, we venture to hope that his ensuing year will witness the actual commencement of Greater Auckland and I the definite undertaking of a .sufficient drainage scheme. The ground is well prepared for both steps, thanks to our good fortune in having had an eminently practical business man for Mayor.
