VICTORIA RACING CLUB'S AUTUMN MEETING.

NEWMARKET HANDICAP WON BY

PENDANT.

By Telegraph.—Press Association.—Copyright

Melbourne, March 3No autumn meeting held under V.R.C. auspices commenced tinder more favourable conditions than this year's gathering. The weather was perfect, a bright sun being tempered by a coot breeze. One of the biggest crowds that has assembled at Flemington in the autumn was prese-nt. His Excellency the Governor-Genera] and suite were amongst the distinguished visitors. In the opening event—the Hopeful Stakes —the Auckland-bred colt Gapon was made favourite, and he justified the confidence by winning his race in capital style. The St. Leger Stakes was voted the best of good things for Lady Wallace, on whose ability to win s's to 1 were laid. The summing up proved to be perfectly justified, for the daughter of Wallace simply romped over her opponents. When the numbers went up for the Newmarket Handicap it was found that Istria was the only withdrawal, a field of 22 being left in to contest the six-furlong race. Lachlan held his position as favourite, and he shortened to 4 to 1. A lot of money went on. Pendant, and Medallist wa,- also well backed. Despite his tremendous weight of list 31b, Machine Gun found backers at thirties. The field was delayed nearly a-quartor of an hour. When they dashed away Pendant, who was near the rails, soon headed the field, and streaking away she was not caught. Machine Gun was not seen near the front after the first two furlongs had been traversed.
