ANNIVERSARY REGATTA.

The committee of the Anniversary Regatta met. at the Waitemata Hotel last night to pay over the prizes won at the regatta on January 29. There was a full attendance of the. committee, and M'r. T. T. Masefielct (chairman) presided. After the committee had ordered the pa tiki race to be resailed on February 17, the course to be from off the Queen-street Wharf, round the pile beacon, off Chelsea ; round the first buoy, outside of North Head; thence round south side of the Southern Cross, finishing at starting point, the meeting was declared open to the public, and a large number of the competitors in the races and their friends were in attendance. Mr. Masefield expressed his pleasure at presiding at the 66th Anniversary Regatta, which was, he said, one of the most successful of recent years. There had been only one accident during the day, notwithstanding that there was a very strong wind and heavy sea all of the time, and this, lie thought, was much to the credit of those handling the boats on the occasion. The thanks of the . Auckland public were due to the Huddart-Parker Company for placing their fine steamer Zealand la at the disposal of the committee as flagship 011 the occasion, and the local agents of the company (Messrs. L. D. Nathan and Co.) had given the committee every assistance in the matter. Captain Entwisle, the commander of the Zealandia, and his officers and crew, did all they could to make the day a success, and he (the chairman) thought they would be wanting in courtesy if they did not put 011 record their cordial appreciation of the work done by Captain Entwisle and all on board of the Zealandia. Thanks were due to those who had contributed to the funds for carrying out the regatta, and sufficient had been obtained within 14 days to pay all expenses and the prizes in full. He was very pleased at tho large number of entries in the trading vessels' rate, and he hoped that next year the race would be even more interesting than it was in 1906. Something, he thought, ought to be done in future regattas to provide for rowing races for the various rowing clubs, and he would like to see a delegate from each of the clubs come forward and take up a share of the work ; also representatives from the Royal New Zealand Yacht Squadron and . the yacht clubs in the harbour. Speaking as an Aucklander, he thought that there should be no other functions on Anniversary Day but the regatta, and he trusted that in the near future the Anniversary Regatta would be the one function to celebrate the anniversary of the foundation of the colony, lhc chairman then handed over the prizes to the winners, with a pleasant word to each. Sincere regret was expressed that, owing to a sad bereavement. Captain J. Biddick, of the scow Vesper, winner of the trading vessels' race, was unable to be present to receive his prize. After the formal business was concluded, various toasts were proposed and responded to. including those of " The Chairman," "The Vice-Chairman (Mr. A. Alison), "The Working Committee.' Ihe Treasurer and Secretary," and " The Press.
