'I'm; 'Frisco Mail Number of the AUCKLAND WI'.K.RI.V Nr.ws is always of exceptional interest, and the current issue is of special value foi posting to friends abroad by the outgoing- mail. as it illustrates New Zealand life and scenes, and conveys a knowledge of this favoured comer of the Empire net otherwise obtainable. The double page is devoted to scenes at the Auckland Anniversary Regatta, and contains some striking views of the sailing rates at the popular water carnival. Included in the tine collection are special pictures of the scows in the trading vessels' race, allowing the coastal traders in racing trim bowling down the harbour, and in Rangiloto Channel, the competitors m the big yacht, race, the fishing-boat race, the 25-footers starting, and the Togo, winner of the speed launch race, going at a speed of 16 knots, together with views of the flagship and snapshots of the sideshows.
The Premier's tour of Westland is well illustrated, excellent photographs showing the welcome receptions tendered to Mr. Seddon and party at the various places along the route between Hokitika and the Franz Jo*ef Glacier, the Premier making the ascent of the famous glacier, opening the first section of the Hokitika-Ross railway, and scenes on the route at various places of interest. Other events dealt with include the opening of the Auckland Bowling Association's pennant competitions on Saturday last, the Takapuna. Jockey Club's Summer Meeting, carnival week at Nelson, Palmerston North floral fete, unveiling the monument to the late Thomas Carroll at "Wairoa,' and the recent Chinese riots at Shanghai. Numerous other groups, views, and portraits, including the late King of Denmark, scenes on the Main Trunk line, H.M.s. Powerful, the new flagship of the Australasian Squadron, together with the usual amount of high-class letterpress, contribute to a most attractive number, and a publication which for general public interest stands unrivalled in the colonies.
