AUSTRA LIA'S IMMIGRATION RESTRICTIONS.
The regulations under the Immigration Restriction Act of 1901 of Australia have l)een altered in accordance with the Amending Act passed last session.
One winch came under revision was that applying to alien residents who might wish to leave the Commonwealth on a visit to another country. The alteration was chiefly in the form of obtaining exemption certificates against the dictation test being applied on return. The applicant ii required to fill up a form stating the time he wishes to be absent and where he is going. He has to attach to the application a certificate of character by two reputable citizens, two full and two profile photographs, and an impression of the hand. The process is a little simpler than formerly. The Collector of Customs is authorised to grant certificates instead of applications having to be forwarded to Melbourne. The former regulation regarding ships' officers' responsibilities has been added to. A list is to be handed to the Customs officer of all passengers, specifying name, nationality, race, place of shipment, and calling unci occupation of each. If required, a certificate by the master of the vessel is to be given, certifying that to the best of his knowledge and belief none of the passengers in the list is an idiot or insane person, or person suffering from an infectious or contagious disease of a loathsome or dangerouscharacter, or a person likely, by reason of any physical disability, to become a charge upon the public.
A penalty of £50 is provided for offence! against, the regulations.
