BOARD OF EDUCATION.
The ordinary meeting of the Auckland Board of Education, held yesterday, was attended bv lie chairman (Mr. S. Luke), and Messrs. 0. «T. Parr, A. R. Harris, L. J. Bagnall, G. L. Peacocke, J. D. SutherlandSmith as cookery instructor at the Newton .Manual Training School, at a salary of £140 per annum, and of Miss Millington, as cookery instructor for Thames centre.
Vacancies: The Teachers' Selection Committeo recommended that applications be invited for the following' vacancies: Headmaster— Sole —Gordon and Kaitara. Assistants— Epsom, and Bombay. The recommendation was adopted. It was also decided to submit the following names to the various school committees concerned. for appointment to the several vacancies: Kaeo (headmaster), Messrs. S. Harris, J. S. Broun,M. B. Murray, and J. H. Harvey; Waiharara (sole charge), Mr. Jonathan Brown; Te Rore (solo charge), Misses E. Wilson, H. McGee, and .J. P. Greenup; Whangaripo (solo charge). Miss .7. ,E. Hefford; Tangaihi (solo charge), Mr. Murdoch Macrae: Te Rapa (solo charge), Miss K. A. Kelly; To Arai (half-time schools), Mr. J. S. Leech; Maramarua (half-time schools), Mr. John W. Bennett ; Okaihau (half-time schools). Mr. Wilfred L. Hughes; Brooklvnn and Huia (half-time schools), Miss A. C. Johnston: Wade (assistant), Miss Corali© F. Smith Pttlioi (assistant). Miss Marion M. It was also decided to appoint qualified pupil-teachers to the following schools: Beresford-street, Napier-street, Chapel-street, Newton East:, Newton West, Mount Eden, Karangahake, Waihi, Kohukohu, Tauranga, Waiokaraka.
Finance: The following accounts were passed for payment:—Administration account (39 vouchers), £950 8s 5d ; manual and technical instruction account (77 vouchers), £963 4s 7d; and building fund account (72 vouchers), £1505 9s 2d. The Finance Committee presented a statement of the building account, showing that on December 31 last there was an overdraft of £7221 9s sd.
Irregularities in Returns: The Finance Committee regretted to report irregularities 011 the part- of certain teachers in the matter of furnishing returns and reports, and suggested that those teachers should be reprimanded, with an intimation that the Board would deal severely with any future irregularity. The recommendation was adopted.
Hamilton Manual Training School: On the suggestion of the director of technical education (Mr. George George), it was decided to write to the Education Department, asking for as large a grant as possible towards establishing -a manual training school at Hamilton, with the assurance that the Board would see that it was spent to the best advantage possible.
Agricultural Instructor: The director of technical education read a letter from Dr. J. W. Robertson, manager of McDonald Agricultural College, Canada, stating that in consequence of the announcement in the Canadian newspapers that the Auckland Education Board required an instructor in agriculture and nature study, he had received two applications for the position, and would forward the names as soon as possible. He suggested, however, that it would, perhaps. be more likely that the Board would get the man they required in England. Mr. George said that he had also received advice from Dr. Garnett. secretary of the London Education Board, informing him that he had received 38 inquiries about the position.
