Rio Janeiro, January 23. It has now been ascertained that the number of lives lost by the blowing up of the magazine of the ironclad Aquidaban, and the sinking of the vessel, was 212. Ninety-eight of those on board were saved.
(Received January 24, 10 p.m.) Rio Janeiro, January 24. Mystery surrounds the explosion of the Aquidaban's magazine. Those -who were saved are unable to offer any explanation. The New York Herald says the explosion was caused by a short-cir-cuited electrical wire.
Those on the vessels lying near at. hand heard a great report. The Acjuidaban seemed to bo torn asunder, and sank immediately.
There was no outcry from those aboard. Many of the crew were asleep.
