WRECK OF THE BARQUE ANJOU.

THE FRENCH GOVERNMENT'S THANKS.

The French Consul (M. Bceufve) has received a letter from the French Minister for Foreign Affairs, instructing him to forward the official thanks of the- French Government to the New Zealand Government for the rescue by the Government steamer Hmemoa, in charge of Captain . Bollons, of the crew of the French iron barque Anjou, which was wrecked at Cape Bristow, Auckland Islands, which lie tc the south of Stewart Island, last year. It will be recollected that the Anjou struck a rock and became a total wreck, hut the captain and crew of 21, after staying on the ship all night, succeeded in landing on Auckland Island the day after. The wreck took place on Sunday, February 5, 1905. The Government steamer Hinemoa, on making her usual visit to the islands, found the shipwrecked mariners early in May. For the three months the crew lived on mussels, shellfish, albatross, seals, and biscuits, the latter being found at the Government depot established on the island. Besides the warm thanks of the French Government, tho Premier (Mr. Seddon) and the Minister for Marine (the Hon. W. HallJones) will bo presented with an artistic souvenir, and Captain Bollons with a gold medal of the first class. M. Bceufve has communicated his Government's thanks through the Governor, and has personally visited Captain Billons, who, needless to sny, is gratified at the recognition of the rescue of tho unfortunate French crew. |
