THE WELLINGTON JEWELLERY ROBBERY.

[FROM OUR OWN" CORRESro.VDF..VT.]

London. December 15. At die West Ham Police Court the day before yesterday Samuel MeShine, a. tailor, of Wellington (New Zealand), was placed in the dock charged with having in his possession three gold watches, three gold chains, a £10 note, and a £5 note, all supposed to be stolen, or otherwise unlawfully obtained.

According to the evidence given, McShine went on board the New Zealand Shipping Company's steamer Pa.paroa. while she lay in the Wellington Harbour, and asked to be allowed! to work his passage to England. This permission appears not to have been accorded, for the Paparoa left Wellington with the accused on board as a steerage passenger. Soon after the steamer had sailed, McShine, it is alleged, got into coirrersation .with another of the steerage passengers, with whom he managed gradually to establish some degree of friendship. In the end lie asked her to do him the favour of taking to an address at Belfast a certain parcel which he had with him. and which he could not personally convey to thai place. , For some reason the lady's suspicions became -Housed, and she thought it well to consult the captain with reference to VicShine's regies!. The result, of the :aptain'c inquiries p-oved so unsatisfactory to him that directly the Paiparoa arrived in the. Royal Albert Dock.', he mave McShine in charge of the police. When McShine saw the officers coming towards him, he endeavoured to throw the parcel into the river, but his intention was discovered just in time, and was frustrated. On a search being made the two notes mentioned in the charge were discovered in McShine' belt, and the parcel was found to contain three gold watches and chains, which are believed to he part of the booty obtained in a jewel robbery which occurred in Wellington two days before the sailing of the s.s. Paparoa. At the request of the police, the prisoner at this stage, was reminded for further investigation to be made.
