AN EXCITING INCIDENT.
coach AND horses FALL over A BANK. [by telegraph.—OWN CORRESPONDENT.] GisnoßNE, Saturday. The Wairoa-Morere-Gisborne coach met with an accident yesterday afternoon, at Jerry's cutting, well-known as perhaps the worst place on the road. The cutting is about 19 miles from Gisborne, and when the bridge, now being built, is completed, it will be avoided altogether by a new line of road. The coach stuck in a bog hole, and the near hide leader, in plunging to get out, put the offside one over the bank. There were seven passengers, and these speedily alighted. An attempt was made to cut free the horse which had gone over, but this proved a difficult task, owing to the position of the animal. The pole unfortunately broke, and the coach and horses were precipitated over the bank. The two leaders were held by a tree half-way down, which saved them to a large extent from injury. One horse was hurt lather severely, and the coach suffered much damage.
