The missionaries, Dr. and Mis. Macble. with their ■ ten-year-old daughter, Mr. and Mrs. Pcale, Dr. Eleanor Chestnut, and Miss Peterson took refuse in a cave, but wore pursued and all killed except Dr. Machlo and Miss Peterson, who ohcaped to the Yamen. Dr. Machlo was badly wounded. Another report Rays that Miss Machle i attempted to dissuade soma Chinese from , worshipping idols which they carried, and when they refused she seized some of the idols and declined to restore them to their owners. Thereupon the infuriated processionists surrounded the mission buildings and set them oat fire. Six French priests, who lived in the neighbourhood were not, interfered with by the mob.
