After a very lengthy hearing the N.S.W. Arbitration Oourt, consisting in this case of the President only, delivered its award in the claim of the Sydney Wharf Labourers' Union for increased pay and better conditions. The award gives the men Is IJ,<I per hour for ordinary work (an increase of l£d) and increased rates for overtime and huiir the result being an increase in their aggregate earnings. Among other things gained by the men are the retention of a man on a job once started till it is finished; full, preference to union-, ists for casual labour paid by the hour, though employers may engage weekly-wage men who need not be unionists and would not conic under the award; and concessions in regard to " smoke c/!.is' ; and "breaks."
