Mr. Watson, the Federal Labour Leader, king at the Sydney eight-hour banquet, said:"Then there was the trade union label, to which exception had been taken. At the present time there was nothing in the law to prevent persons putting a. label upon goods. What the Federal Government proposed to do was to pievent the fraudulent piracy of those who wanted to use another person's label. The opponent;* of the trade union label were actually showing sympathy for the thieves and pirates. (Hear, hear.) Were they prepared to stand before the community as the upholders of these thieves and pirates, by depriving a trade unionist of the right to a label he had prepared and registered. The wonderful display at the London Crystal Palace show of various manufactured goods turned \ out by the productive section of the English co-operative concerns, which have an annual turnover of £3,500,0 CX), is being used by prominent Labour leaders as an object lepson for trade unionists, who are urged to devote every penny they can save for such purposes to the establishment of co-operative factories. There would be fewer lockouts if employers were shown that their workmen could enter into direct competition with them in the manufacturing business. Nothing in creation excels their grand endurance of hardship, their science of being happy in misery ; nowhere between the two poles is there a race so addicted (as the Japanese) to luxury, pleasure, indolence, mastery, minute details, grandeur, the arte, the drama, aud the charms of womenGeorge F.
